These drawings were created in Argo 16, Venice. Each composition captures the motion of my hand as it responds to the various musical pieces performed by a jazz band. My hand attempts to encompass the sound of each instrument. It is impossible, ungraspable, yet it tries. What emerges is an approximation of the spirit of jazz.

The following drawings are exercises in memory. I close my eyes. To remember is to project an image onto the dark screen of my mind. Once the image comes into focus, I trace it with a pencil on paper. It feels as though I am copying a photograph that ripples, as if seen through a body of water. When I open my eyes, I see the distortion of the past. Memory is a picturesque rendition of what one has seen and experienced.
